MARCOS
In basketball, taking a charge represents a lot of things. First and foremost, if you're willing to sacrifice yourself a little, it helps turn a challenging position for your team into a positive and at times can have the power to change the momentum and outcome of games. I'm the captain of the Campbell High School boys' varsity basketball team and a year ago one of my best friends, Jordan Sloan, a Pace Academy football player, had just suffered a traumatic brain injury during a football game. Shortly thereafter, when my basketball season started, I began taking pledges for every charge I took in a game to raise money to aid Jordan and his family in his recovery.
Jordan suffered a very rare brain stem injury. So rare that nobody could anticipate the progress he's made so far. He's come a long way in the past year from a point where he wasn't even awake, couldn't blink his eyes and had to breathe with help from a ventilator, to spending 100 days doing rehab as a patient at Shepherd Center, to now being home, breathing on his own, able to move most of his body and doing rigorous physical therapy, and taking classes back at school virtually. That said, there's a long way for him to go and the most immediate need he has is a manual wheelchair. He has an electric one which he still very much needs, but insurance won't also cover a manual one.
This season I'd like to again take pledges for two important goals. First, to be able to fund the manual wheelchair Jordan needs, as well as some additional equipment and therapy services, to be able to be more independent and have access to more places. The remainder of all funds I raise will go to Shepherd Center for their Adaptive Sports program. And once he gets his manual wheelchair and reaches a few new therapy goals, my plan is to arrange for a wheelchair basketball game with Shepherd for Jordan and some of our former teammates to get out and play together.
Taking charges, Jordan's journey, Shepherd Center, and the song Tubthumping by Chumbawamba are all about the same thing... getting knocked down and getting back up again. I'd be grateful for any support you can lend to this campaign for every time I get knocked down in order to get Jordan and others back up again and playing all the sports they love. You can make either a pledge per charge or a single donation. And if you can't support financially, please share this fundraising campaign with anyone you think might be able to help and positive thoughts and prayers for Jordan's family and his recovery are still greatly appreciated. (*Please note all "tips" to help support the fundraising platform are completely optional).
Thank you very much.
