Auction Benefiting Indigenous Peoples in Bolivia Impacted by COVID-19

Welcome to our fundraising auction page!

Our virtual bidding platform on RallyUp will go live on August 14th and stay open for three weeks. All of the funds raised through the auction will be sent directly to our partner organization in Bolivia, CEJIS, to support their COVID-19 relief efforts in indigenous Bolivian communities.

Bolivia is currently in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a healthcare system completely overwhelmed and pushed far beyond capacity. Bolivia is a relatively sparsely populated country, with a mere 2.7% of South America’s population, however it houses the highest percentage of indigenous peoples that represent 36 different ethnic groups.

As of August 8th, the country has nearly 88,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with another 15,400 suspected cases, and thousands of infected rural communities that do not have access to official testing. Indigenous peoples, in particular, are dying at alarming rates due to the lack of comprehensive, multicultural relief efforts from local officials. The virus has now spread through nearly all of the indigenous communities SIREJ works with, and many of our partners have tragically lost friends and family members to the virus. Our hearts go out to those who do not have access to healthcare and are battling the virus on their own within their communities.

CEJIS, one of our Bolivian partner organizations, is working tirelessly to provide PPE (personal protective equipment), medical supplies and critical medications to indigenous communities suffering from COVID-19. We are urgently fundraising to support their relief efforts through a GoFundMe and a virtual fundraising auction. All of the items included in our auction were generously donated by individuals supporting the cause, and 100% of the funds raised will be sent directly to CEJIS to purchase PPE, medical equipment and medications for indigenous Bolivians infected with the virus.

Please help us support this very important cause and stand in solidarity with indigenous peoples during the pandemic! We invite you to join our fundraising auction beginning August 14th .

You may also donate to our GoFundMe at gf.me/u/yfumub

Thank you for your kindness!

Continue reading for a more detailed description of SIREJ

Students for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice (SIREJ) is an Oregon-based organization advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples in Bolivia. We are currently a student-run organization seeking 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in Oregon. Our primary partner is the Centro de Estudios Jurídicos e Investigación Social (CEJIS), a Bolivian non-governmental organization servicing indigenous communities.

Bolivia has the highest percentage of indigenous people in South America yet they are systematically disadvantaged and constantly fighting for their right to land, autonomy, and livelihood. Issues such as deforestation and extractivism are a constant threat to these communities. Our organization, SIREJ, was founded after a trip to Bolivia during which students met with indigenous leaders, community organizers and artisans, and were inspired by their stories of perseverance, their respect and relationship to the environment and to each other. We now work with local partners from the Monkox, Guarayo, Ayoreo, and Guaraní indigenous groups in the eastern region of Bolivia near the Amazon rainforest. Last summer and fall was an extremely challenging period of time for many of these communities due to the massive wildfires ravaging the Amazon and threatening their territories. The fires have returned this July and August, and are forecasted to be even worse than the previous year.

Bolivia is now in a state of emergency because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Without easy access to healthcare facilities, lack of personal protective equipment and food, combined with an economic recession, indigenous communities exposed to the virus are suffering enormously. The country lacks the sufficient resources and infrastructure to support those infected in rural and urban areas, therefore under-resourced populations are dying at disproportionately high rates. For ethnic groups with only a few thousand people remaining, the deaths of their elders also signifies an erasure of their culture and heritage. Many significant indigenous leaders have already passed, taking with them huge amounts of traditional wisdom and history.

SIREJ is urgently fundraising to support our indigenous Bolivian partners battling COVID-19. We are soliciting direct financial donations through our GoFundMe and hosting a virtual fundraising auction on RallyUp. Please help us support indigenous Bolivians during the pandemic!

Facebook@teresagrevewolf

Bio:

Teresa Greve Wolf is a Chilean American Artist, who lives and works in the Midwest. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, Teresa came to the United States four decades ago so that her husband could complete his advanced degree at the University of California, Berkeley. However, during their absence, Pinochet took power of her beloved Chile, and the volatile political climate forced them to stay longer, until they found their life was now in a new land. Teresa's work reflects the flavor of her homeland culture while embracing the influences of the country she now calls home.

Best known for her use of bold color, and strong brush strokes, Teresa has evolved as an artist whose works demonstrate her mastery of the acrylic paint medium. Her landscapes dance, canvases of bright and bold flowers impress while majestic mountains intrigue, all whispering the influences of Cezanne, Kandinsky and Marc. Although her uplifting florals both please the eye and command a room, we see versatility throughout her collection. Several of her works, including multicolored fisherman's boats and Southern Chilean scenes pay homage to her native homeland, while other pieces break away from the serene. Dramatic statements on the struggles of modern immigration and her own experiences of a life up-ended, reveal her capacity to express bold emotions.

Most recently, her work was included in the Museo de las America's virtual exhibit "The Art of Being Alone" and was featured in an article for PAN-O-PLY (www.panoplymichiana.com/blog/teresa-greve-wolf).

"Night" by Tina Maria

Available (1) Bids (1)

Current Bid

$25

Artist: Tina Maria

Title: "Night"

Piece: Original etching print. Etching and aquatint from a copper plate (First of three prints)

Materials: Black Ink on paper

Size:15 cm x 22.5 cm

Location: Portland, OR

Artist statement:

This piece was created on a copper plate that I had previously etched with a landscape and figure composition that was then printed. After printing this first composition I burnished out much of the plate detail and found new imagery within the remaining marks.

Where I find the deep wells in my creative process is when I am moving marks and materials around while thinking in inquiry. Playing within this unknowing always allows inspiration to flow for me and for new, visual layers to form meaning.

In this second composition (the one printed here), I wanted to explore line and tone using the aquatint process and I was thinking about culture and heritage and what these words mean to me in modern life.

The meaning that emerged in this piece was this deep sense of place I’ve always felt as I’ve grown up and lived here in the Pacific Northwest. This inseparable intertwining of people and nature here. This sense of place that has always felt of me and within me. This place that many before me have honored and nurtured and have imprinted themselves and their spirits within. This place of beauty that pulls us into our remembering of our universal connection to each other.

Meet the Organization
Students for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice (SIREJ) in Bolivia

SIREJ is a collection of UO students and faculty working in collaboration with Bolivian indigenous communities, both in person and remotely, to support indigenous rights and environmental justice. The organization is connected to the GEO "Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice in Bolivia" study-abroad program; SIREJ's founding members were participants of the 2019 trip. The idea for the organization was first pitched while we were still in Bolivia, sitting around the table in Paradise Cafe located in Urubichá, Guarayos. Inspired by the community interactions we’d had so far and awed that our experience was almost over, we knew we wanted to continue the collaboration we had participated in and to educate others about what we had learned. From the beginning, we agreed on core values of accountability to our indigenous partners and respect in our practices and communications; these morals are the heart of our organization and direct the ways in which we conduct our projects.

Together with indigenous community members and professors in Bolivia, SIREJ assists in development of projects such as website creation, marketing assistance, and publicity creation which benefit the communities. Additionally, SIREJ is working with GEO to offer additional support to students preparing to participate in the "Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice in Bolivia" study-abroad program, such as team-building exercises and camera-use training.

SIREJ welcomes any who wish to participate and not solely study-abroad program participants.
